Prized around the world by royalty and the wealthy elite, Demantoid earned a reputation as the most superior green gemstone. However, quantities began to dwindle with the rise of the Bolshevic Revolution. In Russia, capitalism and everything related to it was brought to a virtual standstill. Due to this sudden supply shift, prices rose astronomically.
Until recently, production of fine Demantoid from Russia did not really occur on a consistent basis. Yet due to the recent developments in Russia, production of small, very fine quality Demantoid is beginning to surface on the market. Additionally, a recent discovery of Demantoid in Namibia has introduced the possibility for larger quantities of Demantoid on the market. However, the African Demantoids thusfar tend to be on the yellowish side. Nevertheless, the future looks bright for this wonderful gem.
Another special feature of Demantoid is its incomparable brilliance. Demantoid has a refractive index of 1.888- much higher than any other green gemstone. This means that Demantoid sparkles almost as much as a diamond.
